Gov. Phil Bredesen bestowed Sen. Anna Belle Clement O’Brien, the first lady of Tennessee politics, the 2009 Humanitarian Leadership Award. U.S. Sen. and former Gov. Lamar Alexander, along with former Gov. Ned Ray McWherter, hosted a reception in her honor at the Tennessee State Museum. The event also raised money for the Clement Railroad Hotel Museum, which honors O’Brien’s brother, the late Gov. Frank Clement.
In his remarks, Sen. Lamar Alexander disclosed for the first time that he cast his first vote for Frank Clement and led a campus organization for Clement.
Of course, I recall Bill Frist once donated money to Al Gore's senate campaign. Lots of Tennessee Republicans were once Democrats, of course. I can't help but wonder: as the GOP heads further into right field, how much longer will sensible people like Lamar follow behind wackadoodles like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh?
How much further into the wilderness are they willing to go?
